David’s journey from the shepherd’s field to the throne was not a straight path. Though Samuel had anointed him, Saul still wore the crown. David became a fugitive, running for his life while God’s promise seemed distant and delayed.
Still, David trusted the One who called him.
“The LORD will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
Psalm 138:8 (ESV)
These words carry greater weight when we remember the life behind them.
David had moments when he could have ended his waiting. Saul was within reach. He could have forced the promise, but he chose restraint. David left the timing and the outcome in God’s hands.
Anointed, yet waiting. Called, yet wandering.
Psalm 138 reveals the source of David’s confidence. He knew God’s faithfulness. Even as he walked in the midst of trouble, he gave thanks for steadfast love that did not fail.
His hope was not anchored in easy days.
Sometimes God calls us forward, but the road bends away from what we expected. Doors close. Progress slows. What once felt certain now seems far off. We may even question if we heard Him right.
Psalm 138:8 reminds us: God is still at work.
Our responsibility is to remain faithful while God unfolds His purpose in His time. David could not see every step, but he trusted the One who had already gone before him.
Perhaps you are in that wilderness now. You know what God has placed on your heart, but the way forward is hidden.
Do not let the waiting convince you that God has forgotten you.
The same David who walked through trouble could say with confidence, “The LORD will fulfil his purpose for me.” His assurance rested in the enduring love of God and in knowing he was still the work of God’s hands.
You are His workmanship in Christ. Walk faithfully. Obey what He has shown you. Leave the timing in His hands.
What God purposes, He will accomplish. His will remains sure.
Trust His purpose. Trust His timing.
