There is Power in the Name of Jesus

“By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.”

1 John 4:2 (ESV)

Before Jesus saved me, I spent many years stuck in religion. I believed that God existed. I believed in the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Yet I did not know Him. I had no real relationship with God.

I remember how strange it felt whenever God came up in a social conversation. I could not bring myself to say the name Jesus. I would say God or joke about the Big Man upstairs. Deep down, it bothered me. I could hear other believers speak freely and warmly about Jesus. They used His name with affection and confidence. I felt uncomfortable doing the same, almost as if my own mouth betrayed the distance in my heart.

Then came the day I truly surrendered to Christ. I received Jesus, not just as an idea, but as my living Lord and Saviour. In that moment, something shifted inside me. The name of Jesus no longer felt strange on my tongue. It felt like home. I knew Him, and I knew He knew me. His name moved from being a concept to being the name of the One who loved me and gave Himself for me.

John tells us that the Spirit of God leads us to confess Jesus Christ, who came in the flesh. In other words, the Holy Spirit does not just make us religious. He opens our mouths and hearts to honour Jesus openly as Lord. The name of Jesus carries weight because it reveals the Person who saves, heals and restores.

Here is something to carry into the week ahead. When was the last time you spoke the name of Jesus in an open conversation, not in anger or as a habit, but in faith and love? Someone you know may talk about God, the universe, or a higher power, yet never mention Jesus. Perhaps the Spirit wants to use you as a gentle witness in their life.

Ask the Lord for fresh boldness and tenderness. Let His Spirit stir a more profound love for the name of Jesus in your own heart. Then look for simple, natural moments this week to speak His name with sincerity and courage. You may discover again that there truly is power in the name of Jesus.

Shalom, JM
