Wear What Belongs to the New Life

“And to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:24 ESV) Each morning, the world lays out a new garment for us to wear.

A headline stirs up outrage. A trend dresses up impurity as progress. The algorithm whispers envy. Even a comment section can nudge us towards words that wound.

If we linger long enough among these voices, the old life starts to feel familiar again. Sin loses its sting when the crowd calls it good. Compromise comes easily when it offers quick relief.

Paul knew how quietly sinful desire persuades. He describes the old self as being corrupted through deceitful desires.

Deceitful.

That word matters.

Sin never tells us where it leads. It promises pleasure while hiding the cost. It offers freedom while quietly binding us again. The reward feels instant, yet decay has already begun beneath the surface.

Paul reminds the Ephesians that this old way no longer reflects who they are. They have learned Christ. They have heard His truth and received a new identity in Him.

God has created the new self after His own likeness, marked by true righteousness and holiness.

Changing Clothes

Paul speaks of changing clothes. The old garment belongs to the former life. The new garment belongs to the person God has created you to be in Christ.

To put on the new self is to let this new identity shape every thought and step.

God has made you new in Christ. Each act of obedience allows that newness to become visible. Every choice is an opportunity to walk according to what is true.

Paul’s next words bring this down to earth.

Lies give way to truth. Anger is examined before it opens a door to the devil. Words that once tore down begin to build up. Bitterness is replaced by kindness and forgiveness.

This is the new self lived out in everyday life.

It changes what we say when we are let down. It shapes what we watch and what we celebrate. It guides us when compromise would be easier. It steadies us when the world calls darkness light.

We Have Learned Christ

The pressure to fit in will remain. Old desires still call and offer the easy road. Yet we have received something far better than fleeting pleasure.

We have learned Christ.

Our response to a world in moral decline begins as Christ’s truth renews our minds. As His Word shapes our thoughts, our lives begin to reflect His character. We start to see through the lies that once held us.

Putting on the new self is a daily choice to live from the identity God has already given us.
