“... I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4b (ESV) There is a holy confidence in David’s words. He does not speak like a man who has never faced danger. He speaks like someone who knows the Shepherd.

David had watched sheep in open fields and dangerous places. He knew the purpose of the rod and the staff. The rod spoke of protection. It reminded the sheep that the shepherd could defend them when danger came close. The staff spoke of guidance and care. It helped the shepherd draw the sheep near, lead them safely, and lift them from places they could not escape on their own.

This is why David could say, “they comfort me.” The comfort came from knowing that the Shepherd was near, watchful and ready. The rod and staff were signs that the sheep had not been left to fend for themselves.

Faith still sings in the valley. When hope seems spent, the Spirit reminds us: it is not over. God still makes a way for His people.

As believers, we will walk through valleys. We will face seasons that test our courage and stretch our faith. Yet Psalm 23 lifts our eyes above the valley and fixes them on the Shepherd who walks with us. Jesus does not lead from a distance. He comes near. He protects with power, guides with tenderness, and keeps His people secure in His hands.

So take courage this week. Fear may speak loudly, but it has no final authority over the child of God. Darkness may gather, but the Light of the world still shines. The fire may feel hot, and the waters may rise, yet your Shepherd is with you.

Wherever you are between the valley and the mountain, lift your eyes to Jesus! His rod reminds you that He protects. His staff reminds you that He leads. His presence reminds you that you are never alone.

Above all, remember: Christ has secured everlasting life for His own. Let this truth steady your steps. Walk into this week with courage, hope, and gratitude.

Shalom, Jacques
