“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”
Psalm 118:8 (NKJV)

There are seasons when this verse moves from something we recite to something we must live. It becomes a word we know and a truth that steadies us.

In recent days, I have walked through disappointment. Promises were made, and I shaped my path around them. Yet just as the journey was to begin, the ground shifted. What seemed certain became uncertain.

It wounded. It unsettled. I found myself rethinking the way forward, with little time to prepare.

This morning, a friend in ministry sent me Psalm 118:8. I do not believe it was by chance. The Lord used it to remind me of what I know, but needed to remember: people may falter, but God is faithful.

Dr John Gill wrote of this verse:

"It is not good to put confidence in man at all; it is trusting to a broken staff, to a mere shadow, which can yield no support or relief: it is best to trust in the Lord; he is able to help, as well as willing; he is faithful to his word, and unchangeable in his promises; whereas man, though he may have a will to help, oftentimes has it not in his power; and when it is in his power, and has promised it, he disappoints, being changeable or unfaithful."

This calls us to freedom rather than suspicion or bitterness. Our hope cannot rest on human promises. Only the Lord is unchanging.

People may mean well, yet lack the strength to help. They may promise, yet change. Even those who love us can fall short.

But the Lord is steady. He does not change.

When the ground moves beneath us, He is our rock. When plans collapse, His purpose stands. When disappointment wounds, He calls us to quiet trust.

Step into this week with your trust anchored in Him. Love others. Forgive freely. Walk with grace. Let your confidence rest in the Lord alone.

He alone can carry it.

Shalom, Jacques

The Law of Love

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37 to 40. This passage brings us straight back to the heart of faithful living: love.

Wonderfully Made

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13 to 14) A plunge into the English Channel became a fresh reminder that the human body bears witness to God’s purposeful and breathtaking design.
