When the Road Gets Steep

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith...” (Hebrews 12:1 to 2) When the road rises, and breath grows thin, we are not alone, for this passage calls us to endure by fixing our eyes on Christ.

When the road rises, and breath grows thin, we are not alone. Hebrews 12 follows the long line of faith in chapter 11. The writer invites us to join the race, to run with endurance as those before us did.

For the first believers, the path was marked by hardship and the pull to turn back. Faith was not a moment’s passion, but a steady race that called for perseverance.

The cloud of witnesses is not distant. Abraham, Moses, Rahab, and many others still speak. Their lives bear witness that God is faithful and that the journey can be finished.

Yet the call is not only to run, but to run free. We are told to lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely. Not all burdens are sinful, but many slow our steps: distraction, fear, pride, or the longing for approval. Unbelief, most of all, draws us from trust in God.

Above all, our eyes are fixed on Jesus. He is not simply another example. He is the Founder and Perfecter of faith, the One who opened the way and will bring us home. The saints looked ahead in hope, but Christ fulfilled every promise. He endured the cross, despised its shame, and now sits in victory at the right hand of God.

When the path grows steep, do not let your gaze fall only on the ground beneath your feet. Look to Christ. Others show us the race can be finished, but only Jesus carries us through. Fix your eyes on Him, set aside what weighs you down, and run with endurance into the days ahead.

The Law of Love

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37 to 40. This passage brings us straight back to the heart of faithful living: love.
