Fellowship Matters

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV)

This morning, I felt demotivated to go to church. I have been alternating between two campuses and was due for a visit to the furthest one, which involves multiple overland and underground trains and a one-way trip of up to two hours, depending on reduced services and or delays on Sundays.

Yet I went, and on retrospect, I am glad I did.

Besides a blessed service, I spoke with a young volunteer who teaches science in South London. We spoke about the youth of today and compared South Africa and England. He spoke of the strain that comes with teaching those who resist guidance.

I reminded him that every child carries a story. Their actions often reveal the shape of their home and the lessons they have learned along the way.

He shared how God called him to teach, a word spoken over him in an ordinary place. Soon after, he stood before a classroom and met resistance. He endured the early trials. Now, four years on, he sees the purpose in his calling. Conviction and joy have taken root.

I left reminded that calling is often renewed in the community. He left encouraged, seeing his students with new eyes. All because we both showed up.

This is the gift of fellowship. We gather not only to worship, but to be strengthened by one another. God meets us in shared worship, honest conversation, and the testimony of His faithfulness.

This week, do not walk alone. Show up. Offer encouragement. Your presence may be the very answer to someone's prayer, and perhaps your own.

Shalom, JM

The Law of Love

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37 to 40. This passage brings us straight back to the heart of faithful living: love.
