“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13 to 14) A plunge into the English Channel became a fresh reminder that the human body bears witness to God’s purposeful and breathtaking design.
This morning, I joined a men’s group for a Sunday plunge in the English Channel. As a first timer, I listened closely as we did the breathing exercises and prepared ourselves for the shock of the cold. Then, before I quite knew it, I was under.
The shock of the cold awakened every part of me. Breath quickened. Heart hammered. Blood surged. In that moment, awe rose, not first at the sea, but at the God who made me.
The body does not meet cold passively. It responds with astonishing intelligence. When sudden cold strikes, the body acts quickly to protect life. Breathing changes, the heart works harder, and blood vessels in the skin narrow to conserve heat and shield the vital organs. What feels chaotic in the moment is, in truth, deeply ordered. The body is not panicking without design. It is responding according to design.
Standing in the water, Psalm 139 echoed within me. David’s words are not mere poetry. They are worship. The body, in all its hidden wisdom and strength, bears witness to a Creator who crafts with care. We are not accidents. We are shaped by the hand of God.
How quickly we forget. We live inside miracles and call them ordinary. Breath comes unbidden. Hearts beat without command. Every pulse, every hidden response, whispers the same truth: the wisdom of our Creator is beyond measure.
Psalm 139 does not end in self-admiration. It leads us to worship. David’s wonder is not for himself, but for God. True reflection on the body ends not in pride, but in praise.
Today, the cold sea reminded me: God’s design is purposeful and profound. Even in stress, the body reveals order. Even in shock, it reveals care. In every hidden work, it declares the glory of the One who formed us.
This week, pause and remember: you are not self-made. You are fearfully and wonderfully made by a God whose wisdom has no equal. Let this truth lead you from admiration to worship.
Shalom, JM

The Law of Love
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37 to 40. This passage brings us straight back to the heart of faithful living: love.
