The Law of Love

Published on 22 March 2026 at 15:30

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37 to 40. This passage brings us straight back to the heart of faithful living: love.

When the Pharisees pressed Jesus with their questions, He did not answer with argument or cleverness. He returned to the heart of the matter: love.

First, love for God. Then, love for neighbour. This is the order that shapes every faithful life.

Obedience is not a cold ritual. At the centre of God’s law is relationship. He seeks not our outward motions, but the full devotion of our hearts. To love God with all that we are is to let Him shape every thought, every desire, every act of worship. He is not a guest in our lives. He is the centre.

Yet love for God cannot remain hidden. It must overflow into love for others. We cannot honour God while holding pride or bitterness against our neighbour. The love of God is seen in how we speak, forgive, and serve.

Love is not a gentle suggestion. It is the fulfilment of God’s intent for His people. Here, the whole law finds its meaning. Love keeps us from empty religion and careless living. It calls us higher, into a life that reflects God’s own heart.

Let us ask the Lord to search us. Is our love for Him whole, or has it grown divided? Is our love for others real, or have we let distance or selfishness take root? The law of love calls us back to what matters most.

To love God rightly and to love others sincerely is not a burden we carry in our own strength. It is the fruit of a heart transformed by Christ. The more we behold His love for us, the more we are empowered to walk in love toward Him and toward one another.

Go into this week with a heart set on loving God first. Let that love shape every step, every word, every relationship.

Shalom, JM
